I often recall a passage in Of Mice and Men in which George tells Slim of a time when George is showing off to some guys. To demonstrate the power George holds over Lennie, George tells Lennie to jump into a body of water, which Lennie does despite not knowing how to swim. George feels bad, though, so he jumps in and rescues a near-drowning Lennie. Lennie is so relieved to be saved that he showers George with love and gratitude, ignoring the fact that it was George who told Lennie to jump in the first place.
I think if this when baby Sadie is fussing in her bassinet/crib or on the play mat or some other location where I placed her. She always gives me a huge, rewarding smile when I lift in my arms, oblivious to the fact that I was the one who put her down to begin with.
